Map Symbols lesson plan

Material for astudents’ activity on symbols:

• Students can be shown these YouTube videos on (a) map key in general and (b) map key of a map park (both ideals for elementary school students)
• Ask your students why symbols are used on maps
  • This page of Ordnance Survey’s Mapzone provides a simple answer to you students.
• Have your students make their own symbols for a specific spatial phenomenon (e.g., this YouTube video provides an activity idea for kids on how to make symbols for different landforms)
• BBC’s Bitesize, has an informative article on Map symbols, direction and contour lines that you can adjust to your own class needs and learning objectives.
